Pod of Risso Dolphins Sighted off Lamorna Cove

A pod of more than 40 Risso’s dolphins were spotted just off Lamorna Cove, these dolphins are normally only seen in ones and two’s off Cornwall and then often only by fishermen well away from the coast.

The Risso’s dolphin is distinguished by its bulbous head and bulky anterior body, it’s thought that the rare number of dolphins was drawn into shore by an abundance of fish.

Risso’s are among the larger members of the dolphin family and are mainly found in tropical, deep waters.

They swim in groups of between 3 and 50 animals, which spread out in a long line when hunting for food.

If we get a sunny afternoon this weekend we are off to see if we can spot them!
